Book Review: 100 Doors & Door Features by Ennead Games

This past week I had an opportunity to download 100 Doors & Door Features by Ennead Games as a promotion on RPGNow. Since I typically like this sort of thing, I couldn’t pass up the price of free… (Though the base price of $0.50 at RPGnow/DriveThruRPG is pretty enticing as well!)

First, I think this will be the shortest product I have reviewed to date. Why you ask? The whole document basically consists of a cover, an introduction, and six pages of a table that goes from 1-100!

How do you use it? Pick a door. Roll d100. Look up the result. Pretty easy.

So I decided to create a five room dungeon and roll on the table five separate times to see what would come up. To do the actual die rolling, I used Brock Jones’ Online Die Roller and got these results: 17, 2, 5, 1, and 57. Here’s what those rolls ended up with for door features:

  • 17 = Color Change – Anyone or thing who passes through the door has their colors changed, but is otherwise OK. Change back by walking through the door again or waiting two hours.
  • 2 = Aging – Anyone passing through the door has their age doubled, but cannot die due to old age. The effect wears off after 24 hours.
  • 5 = Announcement – Anyone passing through the door (even if they are invisible, phased, or cloaked) hears a clear voice announce their true name.
  • 1 = Adjustable – This door’s height and width can be adjusted by 50% of its original dimensions.
  • 57 = One-Way – Travel through this door is only in one direction – out.

Wow. Ok, quite an interesting mix of effects there that would really mess with any party of adventurers.

So here’s my Five Room Dungeon using these doors and the Random 5 Room Dungeon Creator at Obsidian Portal as inspiration:

  1. Room 1 – Entrance and Guardian: The dungeon is an ancient outpost. The entrance is a magically locked door. The guardian is a clockwork fighter. When someone enters the room, they change color – roll 1d6 to determine color – 1 = Red, 2 = Orange, 3 = Yellow, 4 = Blue, 5 = Indigo, 6 = Violet.
  2. Room 2 – Puzzle: The PCs find the ghost of a hero of an ancient race. To give him peace, they must find his corpse deeper in the complex and bury it with full blessings. Entering the room, each character doubles in age but does not die due to old age. Age penalties do apply. PCs revert to their initial age after 24 hours with no ill effects.
  3. Room 3 – Setback: Through the doorway the PCs see a chest in the center of the room. Any who enter (whether invisible, phased, or cloaked) will hear their true names be clearly announced to all within earshot. If the PCs touch the chest, the ceiling collapses. Take normal damage and they must then dig through the rubble to get back to the door.
  4. Room 4 – Climax: A Hill Giant Ghast lies in wait within this room. And if the PCs escape and think the monster cannot fit through the doorway, they are in for a rude awakening. The Ghast can adjust the size of the doorway and squeeze into the hallway to pursue the party.
  5. Room 5 – Twist: In the room beyond the ghast, the PCs can see an open stone sarcophagus in the middle of the room holding the human remains of the hero from Room 2. Unfortunately the doorway only goes one way – out of the room. The PCs will need to find a way to get into the room that doesn’t involve the door to remove the body.

Not my finest work, but I have to say that the doors did inspire some interesting choices. With 100 different effects in the table, there are some very interesting things to throw at your players.

That said, though this product is inexpensive (i.e. free or $0.50), I was disappointed by the writing, editing, and layout. The cover is pretty basic, but offers some color compared to the rest of the PDF which is entirely black and white with no additional artwork. There were multiple typos in the document as well as many grammatical errors. And the document would benefit from adding page numbers to each page. Even though it’s short (8 pages total), page numbers provide a certain amount of easy navigation and reference to find something quickly later. An editor and a bit of page layout would have resolved
90% of these issues.

100 Doors & Door Features offers some unique twists on the standard door in a roleplaying game and would be a good tool for any DM/GM looking to spice things up a bit for their players. The typos and grammatical errors take a bit away from the unique character of the various seeds, but I can see it as being a great way to detail a map for a campaign, especially since it’s so inexpensive.   • Hiya, this is Chris, the author of the product. Glad you liked it. Thanks for also giving constructive feedback on it. The covers and internal, yeah i can see why it’s considered simplistic, but I found doing the covers this way helps to keep the cost down a lot. One of my goals is basically value for money.
    As for the errors, well I’ll put my hands up to that one and simply say “Yes I goofed, thought I had done it correctly..lesson learnt” 🙂

      @Mobius (aka Chris) – No worries on the feedback. I know art is expensive. And I totally understand wanting to keep costs down. But, there are things you can do with layout by inserting shading or adding little graphic elements like borders. In this case, I might see if you could find a white “door” outline to use as the frame for the page for example. Page numbers at the bottom is another easy, non-graphic idea. And I would have liked to have perhaps seen a break-out box or page where you show an example of using the table in context…

      Editing-wise, they were just little things but they added up quickly. Another pass or two with someone you know who writes well would have probably caught most of them.

      But the content itself is great. Very creative. I suspect I’ll be using it if I ever get back to GMing again!
